About ‘An American In a Strange Town’
AIAST is all about being an outsider, the guy on the outside, looking in. As a perpetual tourist/foreigner, life has always been an adventure for me. Before, it was Buenos Aires, now it is Managua…but it makes no difference, this world is full of fascinating stories and people, and it’s my job to find them. So, whether it is rum drunk gardeners brandishing machetes, half-baked Sandinista politics, 4 year-old pinata birthday parties, or simple the family of iguanas that live on my roof, I’ll try to chronicle it all.
About Jamie Atkinson
Well, I’m a thirty-something dad living the dream. My wife toils away as a diplomat, while i enjoy these interesting and exotic locales. I have the luxury of sipping mint juleps and smelling the roses, so to speak. I juggle my time being a good dad/husband, working at home, and pursuing my many passions, which include, but are not limited to, finger-picking blues guitar, tennis, running, exploring the world, and, of course, blogging. Check out Ramblin Round Managua, my site dedicated to blues music and movie reviews here.
Originally, I hail from suburbia, Atlanta-style. I attended the University of Georgia for my B.A. (history), and went on to obtain my M.A. (Romanian history) at the University of Northern Colorado. My work experience is quite varied, ranging from international award-winning brewmaster to copy editor of a french history journal. Before moving to Managua, Nicaragua in August 2006, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years. So, in essence, I’ve been an ‘American in a Strange Town’ for quite awhile already.
