Cathy’s Waffle House

Cathy’s Waffle House in Granada, Nicaragua

Last Sunday, under the auspice of ‘going out for an American breakfast’, my family and I went out to pick up my new classical guitar. Hehehehe…..As it turned out, we just went to breakfast…….not just any breakfast, mind you, but an authentic American breakfast.

I’m talking pecan waffles, Denver omelettes, chocolate pancakes, home fries, eggs any way you want them…..’the works’.

Cathy’s Waffle House on a busy Sunday morning

All this time, we’ve been living in Managua, and I didn’t know that if you just got on the highway (a little two-lane affair for those unfamiliar with Central American ‘highways’) and go towards Lake Nicaragua until you get to the beautiful colonial city of Granada.

Covenant across from Cathy’s Waffle House

Once you get to Granada’s main square, just mutter these words to any local….Podria decirme donde esta Cathy’s Waffle House? Any just like that, you too can be eating flapjacks with Aunt Jemina syrup, enjoying bottomless cups of American coffee, and even order a 1/2 pound cheeseburger if you’re feeling a little crazy…..

Some satisfied customers

Ahh, like everything else in this country, it isn’t what it seems………

Nica Halloween

Filed under:  Managua, Nicaragua, United States, chele  by:  Jamie

4 year-old Halloween party…..Nica style!

What Halloween party for preschoolers is complete without marching bands playing Bourbon street romps

Searing 90+ degree heat in three-wheeler rickshaws with no adequate water

And of course, a healthy heaping of Rojita and sugar cake to satisfy those 9am hunger pangs

Seriously, in all, it was a great idea, but destined to be a bit challenging. Rounding up 60 or so 2-5 year old Spidermans, Supermans, princesses, and other sometimes spooky characters is not an easy task. In all, a great experience and our little soldier man had a great time.

Full Steam Ahead….Moldova Bound?

Filed under:  Foreign Service Life, Managua, Moldova, Nicaragua, Travel  by:  Jamie

Well, with the deadline looming tomorrow, we’ve made it clear the place we want to hang our hat on after our time expires in Managua.

That’s right folks…..It isn’t even close. Chisinau, Moldova is our number 1 choice. For those interested in this relatively new (circa 1991) landlocked country. The poorest country in Europe, Moldova was a former republic of the now-defunct Soviet Union. With its 4-5 million or so inhabitants, essentially a mixture of ethnic Romanians and Russians, wine is the number one industry, owning the world’s largest underground wine cellar, some 60 kilometers or so of labyrinth-like storage area.

Bun venit!

We’ll find out in the coming months whether they feel the same about us. Hopefully, there aren’t many other bidders equally as zealous for this little slice of paradise.

Masks and Guitars

Filed under:  Guitar, Nicaragua  by:  Jamie

Speaking of guitars, I’ll hopefully be reporting on my brand new custom-built Nicaraguan classical guitar later this week.

That is, if my wife doesn’t kill me first…..

Seriously, if you come to Nicaragua, do yourself a favor and go to Masaya. In addition to custom-built Rosewood guitars, there are oodles of hand-carved painted masks.

They make great decorations for scaring the hell out of small children, and are wonderful conversation pieces, I’m sure…

Playing the Nicas at Tennis, pt. 2

Filed under:  Flor de Caña, Foreign Service Life, Managua, Nicaragua, Playing the Nicas at Tennis, chele  by:  Jamie

Tomorrow, we begin a new journey. My wife will join me in my Nica endeavor to master the sport of tennis. Actually, we’d just like to be able to play the sport well enough to retire from Nicaragua’s national watersport called Flor de Caña.

I’m really excited, as I have visions of us soaking up rays in our golden years, decked out in Bjorn Borg canvas tennis shoes and headbands, sipping carrot and celery juice from our Jack Lalanne juicer in the breezy banana republic breeze. Ahhh, my true soul mate!

Flogging for No Blogging

Filed under:  Flor de Caña, Foreign Service Life, Managua, Nicaragua, chele  by:  Jamie

I’ve been a bad blogger lately. That is, my blog has been defined by deafening silence. I have plenty to say, just not enough time. Being a papa x2 has been taking its toll.

Fatherhood, coupled with work and Nica-life has taxed me of late. Heck, just living in Nicaragua is enough to sap a guy of his strength. Case in point, for those of you that follow this blog….err, all 3 of you…. Remember the maid that we [fired/let go/mutually decided to leave the evil Americans] a couple of months ago, for lying, stealing, refusing to work, et al.? Well, she has re-emerged, trying to extort money out of us. Armed with a couple of ‘lawyers’, she recently ’suggested’ via email that I acquiesce to her demands (a year’s worth of salary for no good reason), or else she will go on the Nica version of Sally Jesse Raphael, and expose the ‘psychological and verbal abuses’ that I, a ‘terrible American’, meted out over our brief time together. So, in fairness to you, the reader, I will spell those out….

-For starters, when I first hired her, I agreed to pay about 4 months of health benefits that had fallen into arrears, a gift of sorts…..Of course, this was part of my master plan, to ensnare her in a false sense of security with the mean, nasty foreigner…..the deceitful American.

-Then, in a fit of fiendish tomfoolery, I went through all of our son’s clothes and toys, donating everything that couldn’t be used by him (believe me, it was a lot) to her, and her family.

-Blinded by rage, or perhaps Nicaraguan rum, I looked the other way for much of the ensuing 10 months, while she planted herself in her room, glued to the television that I explicitly bought for her to enjoy. An aside…it is funny, when I was within her line of sight, she would jump up like Gomer Pyle, eager and attentive, to the incredulous gaze of Sergeant Carter.

-As if I hadn’t spelled out my evil intentions enough, I spent more money on her and her daughters’ Christmas gifts than I did on my own son, esnuring that they had ample clothes for school, and paying their bus fare, when they had a hankering to pilfer our cupboards, all under the guise of ‘playing with my son’.

-I pretended not to know, perhaps in a fit of ‘evil American’ diabolicism, when she stripped all of my fruit trees bare, all the while blaming the gardener and night guards….or, when she consistently made long distance phone calls on my dime.

Of course, you may ask, ‘Why did you put up with her for so long?’ Well, the short answer is this…..We hired her to help take care of our son….and by all indications, she actually did a good job of that. The long answer is that, ironically enough, I felt pity for her…..she has two young daughters…and very little financial security. I was paralyzed by the image of her returning to her daughters with no job, while I was missing a couple silly ole mangoes from my trees. In the end, the theft of mangoes was symptomatic of a greater problem, which has now threatened to thrust me into the throes of Nica daytime TV drama.

Busy Days and Garrobos

Filed under:  Foreign Service Life, Managua, Nicaragua, Travel  by:  Jamie

I havent written much lately. It doesnt mean that nothing has been going on. Quite the contrary. In fact, I need a rest.

In the coming week, Ill be uploading some video of Nicaraguan soccer for preschoolers (with yours truly), providing some info on high-quality Nicaraguan classical guitars, and generally trying to juggle new parenthood (redeux) with my blogging responsibilities (ahem….I suppose there are some of those).

At any rate, it remains hot and humid in sunny Managua. The garrobos (giant iguanas) are still living on our roof. Indeed, there is a family of foot long reptiles that live between the roof and the ceiling of the house, a kind of false attic, if you will.

It’s funny, as I was sipping Toñas at the house of some Spanish expats today ….we shared stories about all the different bichos (critters) that we’ve seen here in Nicaragua. The conversation began as we witnessed a motmot, the national bird of Nicaragua and a beautiful mockingbird, all within the span of a couple of minutes.

Busy Weekend

Filed under:  Foreign Service Life, Managua, Nicaragua, United States  by:  Jamie

We spent the weekend paring down our stuff, as I can feel our time here in Nicaragua dwindling down. I know we have about 9 months to go, before we head back to D.C., but my mind is already on the States.

So, between eBay, a community yard sale, and giving stuff away to our maid and gardener, I feel like we’ve made some progress. Hopefully, our loss is somebody else’s gain. We made enough cash for a trip down to the Masaya market, where I hope to begin a side business as an artisan mask seller. In the process, I’m looking for a handmade Nicaraguan folk guitar, custom made and all that jazz. Details to follow….

Reverb of Daniel’s Speech…

Filed under:  Foreign Service Life, Nicaragua, United States  by:  Jamie

The word on the street has varied from incredulity to somber acceptance. Of course, I don’t run in Sandinista circles, so folks don’t come up to me and say, ‘hey, you capitalist, imperialistic tyrant!’. So…..it’s off to my normal life of Google, tennis, family, and guitar……and of course, speaking Tarzan spanish.

Tomorrow, I’ll be enjoying one of the greatest expat luxuries of Nicaragua……living in a completely foreign land, with recognizable television, notably SEC football on CBS! Thanks to pirated television, I’ll be watching the U.S. Virgin Islands CBS feed tomorrow. Like most Saturdays in the fall (ha, like that season exists here!), I’m going to hunker down in front of the glowing box and watch my favorite conference matchups.

As we ponder our next assignment in the coming weeks and months, I’ll undoubtedly look back on Nicaragua with fondness, remembering the luxury of American sports at my fingertips. I can see it now…….living in Latvia, watching bobsled competitions and cross-country skiing extravaganzas, while lamenting the loss of Lee Corso. Viva Nicaragua!

Daniel Does The Big Apple

Filed under:  Axis of Idiocy, Nicaragua, Sandinistas, United States  by:  Jamie

(Daniel, looking dapper at the U.N. General Assembly)

Daniel Ortega, would you kindly take a minute out of your hectic, important schedule of denouncing U.S. hegemony, and please follow through with your campaign promise of cheaper Venezuelan gas and a solution for the energy crisis.

Today, my comrade, you officially jumped the shark. The Axis of Idiocy (N.Korea, Iran, Venezuela, et al) welcomes you with open arms and closed societies. Like Rosita said, alluding to gas rationing and power outages, ‘it’s the 80s all over again…..all that we’re missing now is the war’.
